Nearly all of the hostas offered for sale here come from my hybridizng efforts. Since I breed primarily for variegated plants, I grow a large number of streaked hostas. (More about that later). I've been hybridizing hostas for about 40 years now, but since very few of my introductions have been put into tissue culture, most of them are not widely available. One exception is 'Satisfaction', pictured here, without question the most popular plant I have introduced. It's a sport of 'Piedmont Gold', not one of my seedlings, so I can't take a lot of credit, all I did was find it at the nursery. I first offered it for sale in 1997 and the price was $200.00 for a single-eye division. That was in the olden days before tissue culture became so pervasive, and outrageously expensive new introductions were not uncommon. I didn't sell many at that price, but since I was propagating by division, I didn't have many to sell.
I have introduced about 40 hostas, plus more that I've shared with friends but haven't yet offered for sale. Since I don't have my plants tissue cultured (only three, 'Satisfaction', 'Sergeant Pepper', and 'Surfer Girl' have been tissue cultured by others as far as I know.) most of them are rare or uncommon in gardens. Hopefully that's because I don't offer many for sale and not because nobody wants them.
